Nearly new buying guide: Seat Tarraco

The Seat Tarraco is a seven-seat SUV with a sleek, elegant design and excellent road manners. This handsome bolide is a great choice for those who want a little more from their family-friendly motoring. Since 2018, it has impressed us with its sportiness and practicality, and is now a practical used purchase.

New buyers can choose from a variety of petrol- or diesel-engined options under the bonnet. Initial petrols offered a 1.5-litre engine with 148bhp and a 2.0-litre with 187bhp. Later, a 242bhp 2.0 litre was added. The diesel engine is a 2.0-litre unit that can be tuned to either 148bhp (or 187bhp) or 197bhp. Later, it was increased to 197bhp. As standard, the vehicle comes with a six-speed manual gearbox, as well as front-wheel drive. However, a seven speed dual-clutch automatic ‘box is also available and a four-wheel drive was also available.

The entry-level SE models come with 17in alloys and three-zone climate control. They also have automatic wipers, power-folding mirrors, and auto-folding doors. The SE Technology trim adds sat-nav and 18in wheels, as well as tinted rear windows. The Xcellence trim includes keyless entry and move, adaptive cruise control, and a hands-free electric reargate. Xcellence Lux specifications include heated front and back seats. FR and FR Sport replaced the SE and SE Tech trims.

The Tarraco 1.5 petrol engine is quiet, powerful, and smooth. Both the 2.0-litre cars perform well. Both the abstemious diesels have plenty of low-down grunt. The Tarraco, like all previous SUVs from Seat, is known for its taut handling.

It has a firm suspension setup that keeps the SUV’s large and heavy weight in check when turning in corners. There is very little body lean. There are some moments when the ride can be a bit unsettling, such as with dips or crests on the road. However, the car rides well and absorbs all imperfections and potholes, particularly if it is fitted with standard (18in) wheels.

Both wind and road noises are well muted from the cabin. All power options are smooth and refined. This makes it easy to make progress, especially with dual-clutch automatic transmissions.

Multi-adjustable, the driving position should be suitable for all. The dashboard is simple and intuitive, with simple buttons and well-organized switchgear. All trims include a standard 8.0in touchscreen with DAB radio and sat-nav. The interior of the Tarraco is very luxurious thanks to the use of tactile, soft-touch materials.

With second-row recline and slide seats, there’s plenty of room. The third row is where you can compromise on space. Children should be happy, but adults and teenagers will not be content to spend too much time there. Although the Peugeot 5008 has a greater capacity, the boot is large and easy to access.

Buyer Beware

Engine Some diesel engines have low torque at low speeds. Before purchasing one with this engine, it’s worth taking a test drive. The recall also covered this vehicle. Check with your dealer to verify that any repairs have been made.

Interior: Users have reported that Apple CarPlay can sometimes take some time to connect. It is possible for the built-in satnav to freeze or stall.

Recalls There have been two recall notices so far. Make sure to verify with your dealer that the necessary repairs have been completed. Recalls were made for the fuel tank. In some cases the thickness was not up to standard. There is also a possibility of a crack in the frame of the left-hand side front seat due to manufacturing errors.

Reliability The Tarraco has been reported to have had few other problems. The model finished 17th out of 24 cars in the large SUV category in What Car?’s latest Reliability Survey. Seat overall has a very good record of reliability. However, the Spanish brand finished 17th out of 30 in the same survey.

You need to be familiar with

Tarraco prices start at around PS22,000 for an 2018 1.5 petrol, while larger petrols or diesels are slightly more expensive. A good condition, low-mileage, full history 2019 Tarraco can be purchased at a franchised dealer for around PS23,000 to PS27,000, or upwards of PS27,000 if you are looking for a 2020 model. The price of a 2021 car is around PS30,000

The 2.0 TDI 150 is the most economical model, with a WLTP figure at 57.6mpg. The 2.0 TDI 190 boasts 50.4mpg. The TSI 150 is the most economical petrol, with 42.8mpg.

All Tarracos registered after April 2017 will be subject to a flat rate of PS155 per year tax. You should verify that the Tarraco’s price is not higher than PS40,000. If it has, you will be subject to a luxury car tax of PS335 per year for five years starting in years two through six.

SE Technology While the Tarraco is well-equipped, we recommend that you get the SE Technology trim for older cars. It features climate control, rear-view camera, rear-view mirror, tinted windows, rear-view cameras, and auto wipers.

Our choice

1.5 TSI150: If you don’t plan on driving long distances or hauling heavy loads, we recommend a 1.5 petrol engine with 148bhp (badged TSI150). It is smooth and refined, and offers a great blend of economy and performance.

Wildcard

2.0 Tsi 245 Xcellence Lux AWD This Tarraco is the most powerful with 0-62mph in just 6.2secs and a top speed of 142mph. Although it is expensive, it comes with a lot of equipment.
