Richard Watson, a photographer, captured this stunning timelapse journey through four seasons in the Mourne Mountains over the course of one year. It is considered one of Ireland’s most beautiful places.
The timelapse project, titled “Mourne”, explores the rugged landscapes of Mourne Mountains. Sometimes referred to simply as the Mournes or the Kingdom of Mourne, it is also called “Mourne”. Watson told PetaPixel the entire project took a year to complete. It began in September 2020 and ended in September 2021.
Watson says, “I set myself an ambitious goal to capture the most complete timelapse study of Mourne Mountains and one which felt true to the difficult conditions the landscape presents.”
Over 100 treks were undertaken with nearly 45-pound backpacks, and 40 wild camps. Many of these were done in sub-zero temperatures.
He says, “I’ve never felt so cold and battered from the elements.” Wind strong enough for you to blow off your feet. You can hike in snow to your waist. It felt like a struggle. “The mountains won,” I like to believe.
Watson said that the project was nothing but a labor of love. He spent hours documenting the slow changes in seasons and watching the land, textures and colors change.
Watson believes that 2020 has changed Watson’s and many others’ perspectives on what is important and what is taken for granted.
“When all that we felt was our need to be outside, it was the simple and hurtful longing to be there. He says there was no better place to be isolated. “At times I’ve never felt so alive. Other people I have never felt so alone. Completely alone.”
