BMW 3 Series spotted during tests in Germany

A facelifted executive salon is shown with a spoiler, and other subtle bodywork updates

Our photographers captured the new BMW 3 Series in its best form yet. It was being tested on German public roads.

The executive saloon was shown with a disguised front and rear and a black-and white patterned livery.

The design updates are subtle in comparison to the current car. However, the model pictured appears to have M Performance styling and aerodynamic addenda.

The spoiler can be clearly seen at the rear. At the front, there is a spoiler lip and larger intakes.

Although the controversial new BMW grille is not yet available on the 3 Series, it does get new front and rear lights. You will be able to choose from a saloon or estate (Touring) body style.

Although it is not clear yet which engines BMW will offer in the 3 Series update, it appears likely that there will be a range of petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

The four-cylinder petrol engine can also be used as a mild-hybrid option, which could join the six-cylinder MHEV and diesel options.

Another image gives a glimpse of the infotainment system in the 3 Series. It is believed to be the eighth-generation of BMW’s iDrive system as seen in the electric BMW iX or BMW i4.

The 3 Series could get the latest iDrive system. It would be one of the major model updates. BMW called the system its “most powerful”, with a rotary controller and 5G data support. It also features a large central display that curves to make it easier for drivers.

The iX combines a 12.3in digital instrument cluster and a 14.9in infotainment display with a 200ppi resolution.

Expect the facelifted BMW 3 Series to go on sale in the latter part of this year. It will likely be slightly more expensive than the outgoing model.
